Shock Loading Of Hydraulic Cylinders

A shock loading is a sudden impact to full pressure (or beyond) that can be caused by an abnormal load, or operational use.

These loads arise not only from fluid pressure, but also from the kinetic energy of the moving parts of the cylinder and load.

The shock load may cause split welds on the base and ports of the hydraulic cylinder or damage the eye bearing.

Shock loads can be reduced with cushioning systems built in the cylinder end caps, or by using of accumulators that are sometimes placed in a hydraulic system specifically to absorb shock.
